The Kansas City Chiefs selected Blackledge seventh overall in the first round of the 1983 NFL Draft. Todd was chosen behind John Elway but ahead of Dan Marino. He was also selected ahead of Hall of Famer Jim Kelly , Tony Eason and Ken O’Brien in the draft. He was the Chiefs’ only first-round quarterback until Patrick Mahomes came along three decades later.

Additionally, he played five seasons for the Chiefs (1983–1987) before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers (1988–1989).
In Kansas City, he mostly served as a backup to Pro Bowl quarterback Bill Kenney. Blackledge spent his final two seasons in Pittsburgh as Bubby Brister’s backup, going 2-3 in games started due to Brister’s injuries. From 1981 to 1983, Blackledge was a successful quarterback for Penn State, leading the Nittany Lions to a 31-5 record in three seasons. Blackledge won the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s most outstanding quarterback after leading Penn State to the national championship in 1982, and he finished sixth in the Heisman Trophy vote. That season, his passer rating was 10th among all quarterbacks in the country. Kansas City took Blackledge seventh overall in the 1983 NFL Draft.

Along with that, he spent five seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs before joining the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1988.
