Thomas Matthew DeLonge was born in the California town of Poway. His father worked for an oil company, and his mother was a mortgage broker. His first musical instrument was a trumpet, which he received as a Christmas present when he was 11 years old. Despite his early musical interest, becoming a musician was not his first career choice. DeLonge originally wanted to be a firefighter and took part in the San Diego Cadet Program. He first got the guitar from a friend at church camp and became obsessed with it.

DeLonge began dating Jennifer Jenkins, whom he had known since high school, in 1996. They married in Coronado on May 26, 2001.

Following the breakup of Blink-182 in 2005, he formed Angels & Airwaves, which has released five studio albums and has evolved into an “art project” encompassing various forms of media. DeLonge reunited with Blink-182 in 2009, releasing new music and touring frequently, before leaving the band again in 2015 and returning in 2022. In addition to his musical career, DeLonge runs two businesses that he founded: Macbeth Footwear and the technology and design firm Modlife. He collaborated on the score and production of the 2011 science fiction film Love, and he currently has several film projects in the works. On Christmas Eve 2013, he released The Lonely Astronaut, a children’s book.
