Tributes flood the media terrain following the death of Dame Paula Rego, a well-known Portuguese-British visual artist.

Rego died peacefully this morning (June 8), after a short illness, at her residence in north London, surrounded by her family, according to the Victoria Miro gallery. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. She passed on at the age of 87.

The painter rose to prominence after exhibiting with the London Group in the 1960s alongside David Hockney. He recently had a retrospective exhibition at the Tate Britain. In the years since, she has dedicated her career to women’s rights, particularly abortion.

Rego was survived by her three children with Victor Willing, two daughters Caroline Willing and Victoria Willing, and a son, Nick Willing.

In an exclusive interview, she claimed she had these amazing kids after having a series of several abortions.

Nick, her only son, is a filmmaker who directed Secrets & Stories, a television film about his mother, Paula Rego, five years ago.
