Justin Herbert was born into a sports family. His father is Mark Herbert, who played football and ran track at the University of Montana. His older brother, Mitchell, followed in his father’s footsteps and played wide receiver at Montana State University.

He has a younger brother, Patrick, who attends Oregon as a tight end for the Ducks.

Herbert attended Sheldon High School, where he made a name for himself in sports and played football, basketball, and baseball. After high school, he committed to playing college football at the University of Oregon, over offers from Northern Arizona, Portland State, Montana State, and Nevada.

He was a true freshman and became the starting quarterback after the fifth game of the season. During his junior season, he was an early Heisman Trophy candidate. Later in his senior season, he was named the 30th recipient of the William V. Campbell Trophy, also referred to as the “Academic Heisman”.
