Tina Brown was born in Maidenhead, Berkshire, England. She was brought up in the village of Little Marlow, in Buckinghamshire. Her father who was called George Hambley Brown was a film producer who worked on many British films including the Miss Marple films starring Margaret Rutherford.

Her elder brother, Christopher Hambley Brown, also became a movie producer. Her mother, Bettina Kohr, was an executive assistant to Laurence Olivier on his first two Shakespeare films. Tina recalls that Bettina was of part Iraqi descent.
