John Francis Tortorella, born in Boston, Massachusetts, on June 24, 1958, is a professional ice hockey coach and former player from the United States. He is presently the head coach of the National Hockey League’s Philadelphia Flyers (NHL).

Tortorella previously coached the Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Vancouver Canucks in the National Hockey League (NHL). He guided Tampa Bay to the 2004 Stanley Cup victory.

He is the first American-born NHL coach to reach 500 victories and has twice received the Jack Adams Award as the league’s finest coach.

Tortorella is well-known for his outspoken and occasionally combative personality, which has included insulting both his players and members of the media.

Tortorella was the assistant coach of the United States National Men’s Hockey Team from 2008 to 2009, succeeding Peter Laviolette, and led the team to a sixth-place finish in the 2008 IIHF World Championship.

On June 17, 2022, Tortorella was hired as head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers.
