Guy battled heroin addiction for the majority of his brief professional life. Guy had both a professional and personal relationship with Billie Holiday in the years 1945 through 1946.

Guy and Holiday parted ways after they were both arrested for narcotics possession. After that, Guy relocated to Birmingham, Alabama, where he was born, before fading into relative oblivion in the music business.

Even so, he shared the stage with local musician Frank Adams at the Woodland Club while also warning people about the risks of addiction.

Jazz trumpeter Joseph Luke Guy, who lived from September 20, 1920, to June 1, 1962, was an American. The guy was a budding progressive bop artist who collaborated with more well-known musical acts up until his drug addiction prevented him from achieving further fame.

Although much of Guy’s early personal life is unknown, it is known that in the late 1930s, he joined Fats Waller’s backup band and that he started his professional music career by playing live in New York City.

After that, in 1938, Guy succeeded Dizzy Gillespie in Teddy Hill’s ensemble and modeled his playing after Roy Eldridge, who served as his musical inspiration.
