US Navy SEAL Mike Day is shot more than 20 times in the torso.

Mike Day was being attacked by two people, each of whom was armed with an AK-47, and they were only 10 feet apart. Against all odds, he managed to kill them both, clear the space, and leave the home. At that point, he learned that Joseph “Clark” Schwedler, a fellow Navy SEAL, had perished.

Day was able to use Schwedler’s radio to save not only his own life but the lives of many other women and children who were also inside the structure, along with three more Iraqi scouts. It was his only means of reaching the rest of his squad, who had withdrew and requested a fire attack on the building after his own had been destroyed.

The timing of Day’s call allowed them to avoid launching the airborne assault.

They came back to complete the task and clean the home. Day didn’t realize he had been seriously hurt until after they had finished playing and he saw the expressions on his friends’ faces. He had received 11 more gunshots to his armor and 16 to his torso.

The Navy SEAL walked to the MEDEVAC despite the severity of his injuries, saying, “I wasn’t being macho, but I was afraid if they picked me up, it would just hurt more.

He later described his wounds, saying, “I was shot in both legs and both arms, my left thumb was almost amputated, I was shot in the abdomen and had a colostomy bag for a year, my right scapula was broken, I was shot twice in the buttocks, once in the scrotum, and my body armor was hit multiple times causing fractured ribs and contusions on my lungs.”
