Sandra Deal was born Sandra Dunagan, to educators. She was raised in Gainesville, Georgia.
She attended Georgia College & State University where she earned two degrees. In 1963, she received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. Five years later, she received her master’s degree in elementary education in 1968.
For over 15 years, she language arts at public schools before she became the first lady of Georgia. She later retired as a sixth-grade middle-school teacher.
She and Nathan Deal got married in 1966. During their marriage, they have had four children: Jason, Mary Emily, Carrie, and Katie.
In January 2018, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. A few months later, in May 2018, she completed her radiation treatments.
However, she succumbed to the illness on August 23, 2022. She passed away at her home in Demorest, Georgia, at the age of 80, from cancer that had spread to her brain.
