William Broyles Jr. was born in Houston, Texas, in the United States on October 8, 1944. He is a writer and producer best known for the films Flags of Our Fathers (2000), Cast Away (2000), and Apollo 13 (1995). (2006) .

He was raised in Baytown, Texas, went to Rice University after graduating from Robert E. Lee High School, and in 1966 he received a B.A. in history. Broyles was an involved student at Rice and a contributing editor to the school newspaper, the Rice Thresher.
