Zachary Nelson Obituary, Missing Diver Found Dead Days After Rip Current Swept Him
Sarah Parker Authorities in California announced the discovery of the body of a missing diver who vanished after being dragged away from his group by a rip current.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office reported that on January 28 Zachary Nelson, 27, of Newark, and three other scuba divers entered the sea off Fan Shell Beach in Pebble Beach.
But the group ultimately decided against going on the dive “due to equipment concerns.”
Nelson “was battling in the surf about 100 meters offshore,” the sheriff’s office reported, while the other three divers reached the shore. He was thrown underwater by a strong wave and never came back to the surface.
According to the sheriff’s office, the U.S. Coast Guard, California State Parks Lifeguards, and other organizations searched the waters for Nelson.
The sheriff’s office reported that after a two-hour search, efforts to find Nelson were suspended as night fell.
The U.S. Coast Guard and the sheriff’s office’s dive team reportedly continued their search the following day.
Due to “high surf and deteriorating weather and water conditions,” deputies halted search operations just after noon.
The sheriff’s office said that human remains were discovered on Fan Shell Beach’s northern section five days later.
The sheriff’s office reported that the coroner determined the remains to be Nelson’s.
