Kmet went to Arlington Heights, Illinois’s St. Viator High School. In high school, he participated in football and baseball. He collected 48 receptions for 773 yards and four touchdowns as a senior in football.

In 2017, Kmet participated in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He committed to play college football at Notre Dame.

Kmet participated in all 13 games while a true freshman at Notre Dame in 2017 and had two receptions for 14 yards.
