The jazz album “Another Hand,” which David Sanborn started recording in 1991, was hailed by the All Music Guide to Jazz as a “return by Sanborn to his real, true love: unadorned (or only partly adorned) jazz.”

This record acted as a counterbalance to his smooth jazz discography. It was Hal Willner’s creation and featured a cast of performers from genres other than smooth jazz, such as Marc Ribot, Charlie Haden, Jack DeJohnette, and Bill Frisell.

Sanborn appeared in the 1994 film “A Celebration: The Music of Pete Townshend and The Who,” sometimes referred to as “Daltrey Sings Townshend.”

Roger Daltrey, the lead singer of the well-known English rock band The Who, planned this two-night performance at Carnegie Hall to commemorate his 50th birthday. After the event, a CD and VHS video was released in 1994, and a DVD was released in 1998.

Sanborn participated in the 1995 Lincoln Center musical production of “The Wizard of Oz in Concert: Dreams Come True,” which aimed to raise money for the Children’s Defense Fund. The performance was broadcast on Turner Network Television (TNT), and in 1996 it was also made available on CD and video.
