Responding to the distressing incident, police officers discovered Dayton Willis near a ball field at Double Churches Park, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite valiant efforts by EMS, Dayton’s life could not be saved. Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Dustin Harrelson pronounced him deceased on Thursday at 1:36 a.m., according to the official news release.
Dayton Willis had just turned 16 on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in his life. Residing in Columbus with his aunt, he was found in her car, which was positioned along the road’s shoulder, adjacent to a tree line near the ball field at the park. The initial investigations, led by Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan, indicated no signs of a vehicular accident involving the car. However, a .38 revolver was discovered in Dayton’s lap, although the nature of the incident points to a homicide due to the presence of multiple gunshot wounds.
