Nancy Lee Grahn joined the world as the daughter of a Lutheran father and a Jewish mother on the 28th of April 1956 in Skokie, Illinois. The diversity in religion she grew up in has informed her political stance as a liberal democrat.

Lee Grahn was exposed to acting early on into her life as the daughter of parents who were actively into the theatre. Her parents were very much involved in the local community theatre and this went on to inform her career choice. Right from high school at Niles North High School, she began to act in stage performances, starring in a production of Lil’ Abner. Outside of school, she starred in the community theater’s production of Oklahoma!

The commitment to school did not stop her from pursuing life as an actress and she got her first credit as a professional actress while she was a freshman at the University of Illinois. The credit came off her role in a production of Guys and Dolls in 1973. Not satisfied with being a local actress, Nancy Lee Grahn headed to the American home of theatre, New York City, where she studied acting and appeared in several plays, including plays like Barefoot in the Park and Father’s Day.

She got her first major role in Santa Barbara as Julia Wainwright Capwell, starring in 1,142 episodes of the show between 1985 and 1993.
