The tragic and unexpected death of gymnast Mia Sophie Lietke, 16, has been revealed by the German Gymnastics Federation (Deutscher Turner-Bund, DTB).

The news has a profound impact on the sports community and puts a dark cloud over the gymnastics community. Her death happened last Thursday, and while the cause of death is still being looked into, it’s assumed that she had a sudden cardiac arrest.

A Bright Future in Gymnastics
Acknowledged for her skill and commitment, Mia was undoubtedly a rising star in the gymnastics community. Magdalena Brzeska, her coach, frequently emphasized her unwavering work ethic and love of the game. Lietke was a member of the Berlin Federal Base for Rhythmic Gymnastics for six years prior to beginning rigorous training at the National Gymnastics Center in Fellbach-Schmiden in January 2023.

She won the German Junior Championship in the hoop in 2022 and finished second in the all-around competition. She was named Berlin’s junior athlete of the month for her achievements. Mia had always wanted to compete in the Olympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028, and she was on track to fulfill her dream.
