Nikolai Leonov was a former chief of the analytical section of the KGB of the USSR and a retired lieutenant general who died on April 27, 2022.

According to RIA News, he died in the early hours of today.

After graduating from MGIMO, he worked as a Spanish translator at the Foreign Literature Publishing House.

He joined the KGB in the late 1950s and rose through the ranks to become the chief of the foreign intelligence analysis section.

Since 1958, Leonov has worked in the bodies of the USSR’s State Security Committee (KGB), and he has gotten a recommendation to work in foreign intelligence.

From 1961 through 1968, he was on a long-term work trip in Mexico under the cover of the embassy’s third secretary.

He has taught contemporary history at MGIMO since 1994, and in 2003 he was elected to the State Duma as a member of the RF IV convocation from the Motherland group.

Leonov received the Order of the October Revolution, two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of the Red Star, several medals, and the badges

His name is etched on the Hall of Foreign Intelligence History’s Board of Honor. His book “The Hard Times” was released in 1994.

Leonov knew Che Guevara, as well as the Castro brothers Fidel and Raul.

He was 93.
