Mark Dial (age 27, born December 18, 1995) is a former Philadelphia police officer who found himself at the center of a highly publicized case that unfolded in August 2023.

During the encounter, Irizarry was observed holding a small, open folding knife against his thigh, and he rolled up his window. Dial discharged his weapon into the vehicle six times, shattering the window and repeatedly striking Irizarry at close range.

Following the shooting, Irizarry was pulled out of his vehicle and transported to Temple Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The medical examination determined the cause of death as “Multiple Gunshot Wounds,” with the manner of death listed as “Homicide.” The incident has raised serious questions and is under investigation by the Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office.

Dail surrendered on a Friday morning

Mark Dialvoluntarily surrendered on a Friday morning in response to pending charges.

His attorney, Fortunato Perri, expressed unwavering determination to vigorously defend Dial, asserting that the forthcoming facts would unequivocally establish Dial’s legal justification for discharging his weapon, driven by genuine fear for his life.

Following his surrender, Dial faced arraignment that same Friday afternoon and secured his release by posting 10 percent of the $500,000 bail.

Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner and members of his office’s Special Investigations Unit made an impactful move by releasing unedited footage from police body-worn cameras depicting the shooting incident.

Krasner emphasized the self-evident nature of the videos, highlighting their alignment with Pennsylvania law and jury instructions, which ultimately led to the charges against ex-officer Dial.
