Louis Daniel Armstrong, nicknamed “Satchmo,” “Satch,” and “Pops”, was an American trumpeter and vocalist who was born on August 4, 1901. He was one of jazz’s most important figures. His career spanned five decades and numerous epochs in jazz history.

He garnered multiple honors, including a Grammy Award for Best Male Vocal Performance for Hello, Dolly! in 1965, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award posthumously in 1972, and admission into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame in 2017.

Mary Estelle “Mayann” Albert and William Armstrong were his parents. Mary Albert was born at home when she was about sixteen years old in Boutte, Louisiana.

Albert reared their daughter, Beatrice “Mama Lucy” Armstrong, who was born less than a year and a half later.  Soon after, William Armstrong abandoned the family.
