1970 saw the birth of Jules in Colchester. At E.H. Bentall & Co., a business that made agricultural machinery, his father Cliff worked as a mechanical engineer and technical director. Over the course of 40 years, his mother Pam operated a bed & breakfast there. In his opinion, “growing up in a home where there were many of various faces from across the world gave me the courage to engage with others, to talk and listen to them. As a weekday boarder, he first went to Ipswich High School and later Colchester Boys High School. Early on in his life, he became interested in archaeology. He only wanted a visit of the Roman vaults under Colchester Castle for his seventh birthday.
After graduating from high school, he began working for The Colchester Archaeological Trust, where he discovered his love of field archaeology and the science of excavation.

Hudson did not actually leave the show; they were mere rumors. During an interview, he disputed the rumors. “They’ll have to carry me out”, the 52-year-old host firmly responded when asked about his part in the BBC house-hunting program. He continued by saying he cherished the program and had no intention of leaving it.
